This box was custom made for Ruth Hanford Munn (1887-1976) to be used to safely store her possessions. She and her husband, James Buell Munn (1890-1067), used them to safeguard family treasures at "The Farm", 9 Chili Ave., Scottsville, NY, when they were away at their residence in Cambridge, MA. Ruth was concerned that the rambunctious children of her sister in law, Gwendolyn Smith Hanford (1889-1967), would break her freagile things, so the box could be padlocked. The maker of the wooden box was Ruth Hanford's Scottsville high school classmate and local carpenter, John Talcott Wells, Jr. (1886-1962). Upon Ruth's death in 1976, the box and its contents was left to Gertrude Corbin Dunn (1910-2004). She in turn passed the box along to Richard King LeRoy (1943-) who was then the resident caretaker at "The Farm" and Rugh's first cousin twice removed. |
